Pray for the Dead

Do we have any citations from Scripture that our Lord blessed couples in irregular/sinful relationships? What is the Catholic Church's teaching on divorce and marriage? When my father died, my priest said now you pray TO him not FOR him. This confused me, I thought we are to pray for the deceased. and more on today's Open Line with Fr. John Trigilio.
